What Is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift, which normally includes platysmaplasty, but also increasingly work on the deep neck structures (referred to as a deep neck lift), is a plastic surgery procedure designed to improve the appearance of the neck and jawline by addressing sagging skin, wrinkles, jowls, and excess neck fat and glandular tissue. The procedure can be performed on its own or in combination with other treatments, such as a facelift, for stunning and comprehensive facial rejuvenation. It can also improve functional problems with breathing and snoring in some patients.

Mr Marc Pacifico, a consultant plastic surgeon and trusted leader in the field, offers his patients deep plane neck lifting techniques for long-lasting and profound yet natural-looking results. Mr Pacifico and his team are with you every step of the way during your neck lift recovery. Still, the following is a general timeline for neck lift recovery to give you an overview of what to expect.

Neck Lift Recovery Timeline

Neck lift recovery is a gradual process, and each patient heals at their own pace. Still, knowing what to expect at each stage can make it easier.

Day 1: Right after surgery, you will be monitored for a few hours before going home. You might already be placed in a supportive garment, and will likely have a haemostatic net in place, instead of bandages and drainage tube. Expect grogginess from anaesthesia. Keep your head elevated and avoid neck movements to reduce swelling.

Day 2: Swelling and bruising may increase. Use cold compresses, take prescribed pain medications, and rest with your head elevated. Avoid all strenuous activity.

Days 3–5: Bruising and swelling typically reach their peak and then begin to improve. You may have a follow-up visit to remove the haemostatic net stitches. Stay hydrated, eat well, and continue limiting activity.

Days 6–7: Discomfort should ease, and bruising and swelling begin to subside. Light, guided stretching may help flexibility, but avoid strenuous movements.

Weeks 1–2: Swelling and bruising continue to improve, and bandages are usually removed. Neck mobility increases, but keep activity light and always check with your surgeon before resuming more strenuous activities.

Weeks 3–4: Bruising and swelling are much reduced. Many patients resume light exercise, though strenuous activities should still be avoided. Your results start becoming more noticeable.

One Month and Beyond: Most patients are easing back into their daily routines. While a good deal of healing is complete by this point, incision lines and contour improvements continue to see refined improvements over several months. Protecting your skin and maintaining a healthy lifestyle helps preserve your results.

Neck Lift Recovery Tips

Proper aftercare is the key to smooth healing and lasting results. By following your surgeon’s instructions and maintaining healthy habits such as getting enough sleep, eating well, and staying hydrated, you can actively support your recovery and feel empowered in your healing process.

  • Rest well: Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep and allow extra downtime as your body heals.
  • Keep your head elevated: Sleep at a 30- to 45-degree angle to minimise swelling and fluid buildup.
  • Protect yourself from the sun: Avoid direct sunlight, apply ample SPF, and wear a hat when outdoors.
  • Use cold compresses: Gentle use of ice packs and cold compresses alleviates swelling and discomfort, but take care, as overuse can prolong healing.
  • Take lukewarm showers: Avoid hot water and direct pressure on your neck.
  • Wear loose clothing: Choose button- or zip-up tops for greater ease in dressing and to avoid disturbing incisions.
  • Avoid strenuous activity: No heavy lifting, bending, or vigorous exercise until cleared by your surgeon.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to support tissue repair and reduce inflammation and swelling.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Eat plenty of lean protein, leafy greens, and healthy fats while limiting salt and processed foods.
