What Should I Think About When Planning Tuberous Breast Surgery?

The considerations for tuberous breast surgery—both planning and recovery—are quite similar to many other procedures I perform. You need to set aside a portion of your life to focus on the surgery and your recovery. I usually advise allowing for a six-week recovery window. The first two weeks are especially important for rest. Gradually, you can ease back into activity, but it’s unlikely you’ll be doing any exercise during this period. Planning your tuberous breast correction with proper time off can support a smoother outcome.

Is Tuberous Breast Surgery Painful?

As with any cosmetic breast surgery, there may be some discomfort afterwards. In tuberous breast surgery, the breast crease can feel particularly sore for a few days, due to the internal stitches used. This is usually well managed with regular pain relief and typically improves within one to two weeks.

When Will I See My Final Results?

Results can begin to show between three and six months after surgery, but I usually say it takes a full year to see the final outcome. The breast shape may still change during this time, and the scars need time to settle. Gravity and skin relaxation also play a role in the final appearance after tuberous breast correction.

Will Tuberous Breast Surgery Leave Scars?

All surgery results in some scarring. The extent depends on the type of procedure performed. The least visible scars result from fat grafting alone, which leaves very small, pinpoint marks. In contrast, an inverted-T procedure can leave more noticeable scarring: around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and along the crease. Most operations leave a scar around the areola, sometimes with a small additional scar in the crease. These scars tend to be pink for a few months and gradually fade over one to two years. As with any breast deformity correction, scar visibility decreases with time.

Does The Surgery Make Tuberous Breasts Symmetrical?

Tuberous breasts often come with asymmetry. One of the aims of surgery is to improve breast symmetry, but it’s important to understand that perfect symmetry is very rare. As the saying goes, “breasts are sisters, not twins.” That said, most patients do see a noticeable improvement following their tuberous breast correction.

How Long Does Tuberous Breast Surgery Last?

No surgical result is permanent. However, in the absence of major weight changes, pregnancy, or ageing, the results can last many years. If breast implants are used as part of your breast enhancement procedure, they typically last 10 to 15 years, though sometimes longer. Over time, life changes may affect your results, and future surgery could be needed to maintain shape, symmetry, or volume.

Can I Breastfeed With Tuberous Breasts?

There’s a lot written online about the inability to breastfeed with tuberous breasts, but this hasn’t always been my experience. Some patients who have completed their families tell me they’ve been able to breastfeed. My advice remains: “breast is best,” even with tuberous breasts—please do give it a try. You won’t know your capability unless you try.

Can I Breastfeed After Tuberous Breast Surgery?

I always recommend that patients try to breastfeed after any type of breast surgery. If breastfeeding is not possible, we can’t always say whether it’s due to the surgery or would have been the case regardless. One of my patients, for example, had her third child after surgery and was still able to breastfeed—albeit with a slightly reduced milk supply compared to her previous two children. So I always encourage breastfeeding post-surgery, just as I would beforehand.

How Long After Childbirth Should I Wait For Tuberous Breast Surgery?

If you’ve been pregnant—regardless of whether you’ve breastfed—I suggest giving your body time to settle before undergoing surgery. We usually recommend waiting at least six months after stopping breastfeeding. This allows any changes to stabilise. That said, I’m happy to meet with patients earlier to begin planning their breast deformity correction, and we can revisit the details closer to the surgery date. That way, you can organise the timing in a way that suits your life best.
