How Long Do the Results of Blepharoplasty Surgery Last?

Woman with lines on her eyelids

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, continues to grow in popularity because it powerfully refreshes tired or ageing eyes by removing excess skin or fat from the eye area. In addition, it can releive the symptoms of heaviness from the eyelids and help improve visual fields. One of the most common questions patients ask is how long their results will last. This blog will delve into what you can expect from your blepharoplasty results, how long results typically last, and whether you’ll need another procedure in the future.

When Can I Expect to See My Complete Blepharoplasty Results Following Surgery?

While you will notice improvement soon after eyelid surgery, it will take a few months to see your complete results. A general timeline looks like this:

Weeks One and Two: During early recovery, your results will mostly be obscured by swelling and bruising. Ointments and swelling tend to make your vision blurry, and many patients feel tightness around their eyes. As these subside, you will start to see early glimpses of your new eye contours. Stitches are normally removed at 1-week after surgery and the majority of bruising will have resolved by 2-weeks normally.

Weeks Three and Four: Around this time, you can wear contact lenses again, if cleared by your surgeon, and you can conceal mild bruising with makeup. Many patients have returned to work and their daily activities.

Month Two: Most residual swelling should be gone by now, and your eyelids should look more defined.

Months Three to Six: By now, your final results should be visible as the tissues have settled and incision lines have faded and matured into hardly noticeable scars. You can enjoy symptoms relief and a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance—without makeup, if you please. It can take up to a year for swelling to resolve completely and scars to fade.

Upper blepharoplasty results may appear sooner than lower blepharoplasty results, as swelling tends to persist for longer in the lower eyelids. At his Tunbridge Wells clinic, leading plastic surgeon Mr Marc Pacifico always provides detailed aftercare instructions and attentive follow-up appointments to support optimal, comfortable healing.

How Long Do Blepharoplasty Results Last?

Blepharoplasty results are long-lasting, but like any soft tissue surgery, cannot be considered “permanent”. Most patients find the results long-lasting, enjoying them for 10 years or more. Of course, your skin will still be subject to the natural ageing process as well as your environment. Nevertheless, you’ll always look more refreshed and youthful than if you’d never had eyelid surgery.

Genetics and skin quality are significant factors in the longevity of your newfound youthful appearance. Still, there are a few things you can do to preserve the integrity of your results:

  • Limit sun exposure. UV rays are harsh on the skin and contribute to ageing more than any other environmental factor. Make ample use of a high-SPF sunscreen, wear hats and sunglasses, and stay out of the sun during peak UV hours.
  • Make healthy lifestyle choices. Smoking and diet affect the quality of your skin. Eat a diet composed primarily of lean protein, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains to provide your body with a rich, varied nutrient profile. Limit excess refined sugars, processed foods, and fried foods. Drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated and plump. Avoid smoking, which is notorious for introducing unnecessary free radicals to the body, promoting wrinkles and dull skin in addition to innumerable other health risks.
  • Care for your skin. Maintain a good skincare routine, including a gentle cleanser and a moisturiser tailored to your skin type. Skin treatments can also help extend the results of your facial rejuvenation procedures. Ask Mr Pacifico and his team about their medical grade skincare and non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments.
  • Neuromodulation. Injections of “toxin” that relax the muscles around the eyes can be an excellent adjunct to blepharoplasty surgery and will be discussed as appropriate by Mr Pacifico following your surgery.

Will I Need Another Blepharoplasty Surgery in the Future?

Blepharoplasty results tend to be enduring—most patients enjoy their brighter, smoother eye contours for over a decade. Repeat surgery is uncommon unless significant changes occur.

Some patients choose a touch-up surgery, or, more likely, future treatments like non-surgical skin tightening or injectables to maintain a youthful appearance.

Mr Pacifico creates results that look natural and age gracefully with your features. Even as time passes, eyes continue to look refreshed rather than artificial or “done.”
