Tuberous Breast Correction

The Tuberous Breast Correction Procedure
Tuberous breasts describe a developmental breast abnormality in which the breast tissue bulges through an enlarged areola (the pigmented area around the nipple). In addition, most tuberous breasts are underdeveloped and have a high and tight breast crease.
In order to correct the situation, all of these factors must be addressed. The breast is often enlarged using a breast implant, but there are a variety of other approaches that can be considered too. Mr Pacifico will have chosen the surgical technique to correct your tuberous deformity after a careful pre-operative assessment. Sometimes the breast tissue must be redistributed to drape over the implant, all through an incision (scar) around your areola. Alternatively, a separate incision may be made in the breast crease to place the implant, followed by surgery around the areolar. Approaches without the use of an implant centre on rearranging the internal breast tissue using “unfurling flaps” or using fat grafting (lipofilling). It might be that different combinations of approaches are used, either at the same time or as separate procedures.
The aim is to reduce the size of the areola and tighten it to stop the breast tissue bulging through. This leaves you with a circular scar around the areola and sometimes also with a scar underneath the breast. Sometimes a different procedure needs to be performed on the other breast if it is not tuberous, but, for example, enlarged.

What Does Tuberous Breast Correction Surgery Involve?
The operation is performed under a general anaesthetic (with you asleep). You will wake up with surgical tapes along the wounds and usually in a supportive post-surgical bra. If fat transfer has been performed, sometimes Mr Pacifico will advise leaving the bra off for 3-days or so, and in the interim ensure your breasts are well supported with surgical tapes. This is to allow the fat and the breasts to swell without being constricted by a bra.
What Are the Benefits of Tuberous Breast Correction Surgery?
This procedure corrects the problems concerning the shape of your breasts as well as their size, ideally in one operation. Many other procedures described for tuberous breasts involve two or three different operations. It is important to appreciate that there is always a possibility of a further procedure, frequently fat grafting, being discussed to further enhance or improve on your initial result.
In addition to the consolidated operation, tuberous breast correction offers patients myriad benefits, including:
- Correction of breast asymmetry
- Improved breast size and shape
- Restoration of a more natural breast appearance
- Correction of areolar herniation
- Enhanced quality of intimate life
- Feeling more comfortable in swimwear, activewear, and other types of clothing
- Boosted self-confidence, body image, and quality of life overall
This procedure is one of the most transformative and rewarding breast enhancement procedures Mr Pacifico performs. Patients report high levels of satisfaction with their results and a powerful boost in confidence accompanied by a positively enhanced quality of life.
How Long Is the Tuberous Breast Correction Procedure?
The surgery takes about two to three hours.
What Is the Recovery Period for Tuberous Breast Correction Surgery?
The procedure is normally performed as a day surgery procedure, frequently at Purity Bridge in Tunbridge Wells. You should wear a sports bra day and night for at least six weeks after surgery.
How long before daily activities may be resumed?
Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least four weeks after surgery. Driving should wait until two weeks after the surgery — you need to be comfortable performing an emergency stop or similar manoeuvre. If you drive too early and you need to do an emergency stop, the wounds may be compromised.
In order to enjoy the best results, it is essential to follow all postoperative instructions provided by your surgeon. Failure to do so could result in a prolonged recovery, post-surgical complications, poor wound healing, or suboptimal results.
What Are the Success Rates for Tuberous Breast Correction Surgery?
Tuberous breast correction is a challenging operation, but provides good results. Occasionally, minor revisional surgery is needed to perfect the outcome, or additional supplementary procedures are required such as fat grafting.

Are There Any Possible Risks With Tuberous Breast Correction Surgery?
- Wound infection & wound breakdown.
- Bleeding or haematoma: A collection of blood in the wound resulting in the need to take you back to theatre to stop the bleeding.
- Capsular contracture is an important possible complication to be aware of if you are having breast implants — this refers to a tightening of the naturally forming scar tissue around the implant that may change the shape of the breast or cause discomfort. This would mean further surgery to replace the implant and release the tight scar tissue.
- Lumpy scarring (hypertrophic or keloid scarring) which can be difficult to treat.
- Nipple problems, including a change in nipple sensation (typically less sensitive, but occasionally more sensitive) and complete or partial loss of your nipple sensation (a rare but notable complication).
- Breast asymmetry: No breasts in any woman are identical, and although Mr Pacifico strives to make both sides as equal as possible, there will be slight differences between them
- Blood clots: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolus (PE) — these are blood clot conditions that may occur in the leg (DVT) and travel to the lung (PE) which may be very serious and require immediate medical attention — fortunately they are not common.
- Further surgery may be needed to correct for imperfections or significant differences between the breasts.
How Much Does Tuberous Breast Correction Surgery Cost?
Tuberous breast correction surgery can be approached with a variety of techniques, which all affect the cost of surgery differently. Therefore, it is not possible to provide a single price — each surgery is customised to the patient’s anatomy and aesthetic goals.

Tuberous Breast Correction FAQ
-
How can I tell if I have tuberous breast deformity?
Tuberous or tubular breasts are a congenital condition wherein the breast does not develop fully and instead appears long and narrow. Your breast(s) may have an unusual shape or a narrow base. Tubular breasts often droop and have enlarged and puffy nipple-areolar complexes. Oftentimes, patients identify their tuberous breasts after conducting research online and seeing photos of other patients with similar anatomy.
-
Will I have visible scars?
Any surgical procedure involving incisions will leave scars. However, with proper scar care, your scars will fade over time and blend in with the natural tone of your skin. Mr Pacifico and his team will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions, including incision care, to promote ideal scar formation.
-
Is it possible to breastfeed after tuberous breast correction surgery?
This surgery does not affect your mammary ducts and, therefore, should not affect your ability to breastfeed. Be sure to ask Mr Pacifico any questions you may have about breastfeeding if you have concerns prior to surgery.
-
Should I wait until after pregnancy to have tuberous breast correction surgery?
If you are pregnant or actively trying to become pregnant, you are advised to hold off on surgery until at least six months after you have delivered and discontinued breastfeeding. Otherwise, there are no contraindications to having tuberous breast correction surgery prior to having children.
-
Is there a way to correct tuberous breasts without surgery?
Currently, aesthetic plastic surgery is the only way to correct tuberous breasts. Fat grafting is a less invasive option, but in order to determine the appropriate course of action, you must consult with a qualified surgeon one-on-one. Typically, surgery is the most decisive method for treating tuberous breasts, with comprehensive and long-lasting results.
